Hello all and welcome back! Hope you all enjoyed your extended weekend (if you're in the USA), but we're back with another preview!
Today we have Combustion, a cheap incantation that should probably be included in every Warlock's spellbook if they have a sustainable way to inflict burn markers. Let's take a look.
Stats
Type: Incantation
Subtype(s): Flame
Mana Cost : 5
Casting Type : Quick Action
Range : 0-2
Target : Corporeal Creature or Conjuration
Level : Fire 1
Special Text : Remove all Burn conditions from the target. Then, Combustion makes the above attack to the target, where X is twice the number of Burn conditions removed.
Attack Bar: Ranged attack, Flame, Number of dice = X, Traits : Defrost, Unavoidable.
As you can see, this card basically lets you take the burn markers from a creature or conjuration and remove them in order to make a powerful one-time attack against that object. This is opposed to leaving the Burn markers on there and slowly damaging the target instead.
Now, why would you want to do this? On average, burn markers do about 2.5 direct damage before going out. This damage bypasses armor and all that. This incantation's attack has to go through that same armor, making it deal less damage on average. So why would you want to?
Well, there are a multitude of cards that simply put out Burns. The attack cards, Geyser and Surging Wave, along with the incantation, Renewing Rain, all come to mind. These cards could be played at any time to remove all the burns from that object. So this card allows you to try to predict when that might happen, and play it before your opponent can remove the markers.
So the trick then becomes figuring out when to play this card. It becomes sort of "push your luck". & it also depends what is on fire. If the enemy mage has 2 burns or more, they will probably start thinking about trying to put it out. If one of their creatures has the burns, well, then it depends. You have to think "How important is that creature to their strategy?" If you come to the conclusion that it's an integral piece to that opposing Mage's strategy, then the might try putting out those burns. And that's when you play this card. Instead of them being put out, you use them all up to make one powerful attack for the cheap cost of 5 mana.
This card fits in very well with the new Adramelech Warlock that is in this set. Her cards and abilities have been mainly focusing on Burns and this card just adds more to that. Listed below are the cards/abilties that this synergizes well with.
These are just a few of the possibilities for this card. Combined with the new and old Fire spells, Combustion can inflict huge amounts of damage if played right! With this new set, every spellbook is going to have to carry around ways to extinguish Burns in case they run up against a Warlock who has access to so many new toys.
What do you think of combustion? Let me know in the comments below!

- Fireweaving- One of the new Warlock's abilities, this allows her to transfer a Burn condition from one object up to 2 zones away onto another object in that zone. This makes it very easy for her to stack burns on a single target.
- Sersiryx, Imp Familiar - The Warlock's new familiar has a melee attack that can inflict burns and also can cast Level 1-2 Fire attack spells, letting him place plenty of burns on things if he chooses to.
- Adramelech's Touch - This enchantment lets you keep Burns on the attached target even when a 0 is rolled, at the price of 1 mana per Burn marker.
