A few days ago I played a skeleton Necro vs an Air Wizard. My general strategy going in was sitting in my corner and building up a small army, then going after the wizard. The 2 spellbooks used are at the bottom of this post.
Turn 1: 20 Mana
My opponent had initiative. He QC a Mana crystal. I did my typical opening here. I QC Death Ring (15). He then moved up a zone and QC Battleforge. I stayed in my zone and cast Libro Mortuous (6).
Turn 2: 16 (1) mana
I have initiative. For my deployment I cast a Skeletal Archer. He deployed an Arcane Ring. I QC a meditation amulet. I usually use this card if I have a spawnpoint, unless the enemy mage is charging at me. He QC enchanter’s wardstone. This makes me think that he is going to try to either heavily enchant himself or one of his creatures. I then used my FC to meditate and gain 3 mana. He used his FC to cast Moonglow Amulet. It seems as if he’s going to try to build up his channeling and out mana-gain me. I’m gonna stick with my gameplan, I don’t have the cards in this spellbook to try to build up my channeling much anyway.
Turn 3: 20 (1) mana
His initiative. He deploys a Storm Drake hide. I deployed another Archer. He QC Harmonize on himself. Its pretty obvious he’s getting his channeling up now. I QC Harmonize too, but on Libro. He FC a facedown card. We’ll see what it is later. I meditate again and move my Archer into the Near Center. He’ll be in range to attack next turn, and it’s going to be my initiative.
Turn 4: 20 (2)
I prepare 2 Deathfangs and a Nullify. I want to start the attack soon. I deploy a Deathfang and skip my QC. He deploys a Suppression Cloak. This is going to get annoying. He also QC another facedown card. We’ll see what that is later too. Time for full actions. My Skeletal Archer attacks his Wizard. Only 2 damage. He moves into the Far Center and casts a Wizard Tower in my NC. Crap. He puts a Surging Wave on it and attacks the skeletal Archer I just summoned last turn. Also gets a push and pushes it into the wall. Pretty surprised he didn't cast it on me. He probably should have. My Skeletal Archer was about to attack his mage though, so that's probably why. My Archer has like 4 health left and is dazed. I FC another Deathfang.
Turn 5: 18 (2)
I prep Cloak of Shadows and Force Hammer. Gonna take out this damn tower. He deploys Regrowth Belt. Hmm. I don’t deploy anything. He skips QC. I QC Force Hammer on his Wizard Tower. Only 3 damage ugh. That was terrible. He cast Mordok’s Obelisk in the zone below him and to the left, in the corner. Geez. This isn’t good. That needs to be destroyed ASAP. He doesn’t have enough mana to pay for the Surging Wave, thankfully. I feel safe, so I move everything 2 zones to the left. 1 zone away from the Obelisk, so hopefully I can take it down next turn. It’s my initiative next turn too.
Turn 6: 19 (4)
I pay the 4 mana upkeep for my creatures. I need them to take out the Obelisk. I prep Poisoned Blood and Magebane. I don’t deploy anything, neither does he. I QC Magebane on him. He reveals Nullify and negates it. Damn, that would have been nice to have on him. He casts Dissolve on Libro. Oh well. I have some creatures out already and he doesn’t have any, so I think I’m in decent shape. He’s done with his moves so I attack the Obelisk with both Skeletal Archers. Got some lucky rolls and kill it. Attack the Tower with both Deathfangs. Kill that too! Wow, this is going pretty well. Rolling quite a few crits with every attack. I use my FC to cast Poisoned Blood on him. No more healing for the Wizard!
Turn 7: 15 mana
Neither of us deploy anything. I prep a Chains of Agony and Marked for Death. He QC a Circle of Lightning on himself. That’s gonna be annoying when paired with the Suppression Cloak. I QC Chains of Agony on him, in case he decides to start running away. He uses his FC to cast another facedown card on himself and moves to the right. I used my FC to attach Marked for Death on him and go to work attacking.
Turn 8: 12 mana
I prepare a Dissolve and Ghoul Rot. Neither of us deploy. I try to dissolve Suppression Cloak. He reveals Armor Ward, so I pay the extra 4 mana. Then he reveals Nullify, so nothing happens but I lose all my mana. Not sure if this is the correct way to play it, but don’t want to bother looking it up right now. He uses his QC to dispel the Poisoned Blood. I don’t have any mana left so I can’t attack with the Deathfangs. Attack with Skeletal Archer. Realized after the turn is over I could have meditated, so we agree that I can gain the 3 mana, but can’t use it to pay for the attack with a Deathfang.
Turn 9: 13 mana
I prepare Deathlock and another Dissolve. He QC a Suppression Orb. Now that’s my #1 target. I attack it with a creature. He then moves and uses his FC to bring out a Mana Siphon. Ugh gotta take that out too. I’m able to kill the Suppression Orb immediately. I use my FC to meditate.
Turn 10: 22 mana
I prepare a Force Hammer and another Dissolve. Gonna get rid of the Mana Siphon. I use my QC to cast Force Hammer on it. I’m able to kill it (just barely). He skips his QC. I attack him with an Archer. He uses his FC to bring out a Bridge Troll. Little late for that. He has a lot of damage on his Mage already. I attack him with the Deathfangs and bring one Skeletal Archer in my zone and put him on Guard in case the Troll tries to move in my zone and attack me next turn. He had been in the same zone as the Wizard, so he couldn't have shot him with an arrow. He could have melee attacked him but that's only 2 dice of damage. Since I'm doing this, he'll guard me for next turn, and he'll be out of the zone the Wizard is in. This way I can attack with an arrow next turn.
Turn 11: 22 mana
Prepare Grey Wraith and Dissolve. Gotta get rid of Suppression Cloak. I am able to dissolve it this time. He QC a Bear Strength on the Troll. I bring out a Grey Wraith. His troll kills one of my Deathfangs. I attack him with everything else. Almost dead.
Turn 12: 9 mana
Prepare Deathlock and Demonhide Armor. Really no point, but just in case. I QC Deathlock just so he can’t heal in case he was planning to. I then attack with a Skeletal Archer and get just enough to kill him.
After the game, he commented that he had forgotten to put some Walls into the build. They would have been very useful b/c they would have allowed him to protect his conjurations much more efficiently. I was able to kill most of them the turn they were cast, or the turn after, so he didn’t get too much use out of them. It was his first time playing with that spellbook, and the first time he played against mine, so I’m sure he learned a lot and will do much better next time. He’s a smart guy ;)
Until next time, I am Lord0fWinter, and I hope to see you in the arena!
